History of Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy, developed by the late Tom Bowen in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia, is a gentle yet dynamic body therapy known for its therapeutic and effective results. Tom Bowen, an acclaimed Australian therapist, utilised a series of gentle, non-manipulative moves over muscle and connective tissue, employing only his thumbs and index fingers. His innovative approach allowed many thousands of people to overcome pain and various conditions, often achieving relief in just two to three treatments.

Tom Bowen’s work, which continued until his death in 1982, focused on empowering the body’s innate healing abilities. He emphasized balance and harmony, which frequently resulted in fast and lasting relief from discomfort and pain. Bowen Therapy is versatile and considered safe for everyone, from newborns to the elderly, addressing conditions ranging from sports injuries to chronic or organic complaints.

In 1974, Bowen commissioned Oswald Rentsch, a natural therapist, to study and document his complete work. This extensive project took over two years to complete and ensured the preservation and further dissemination of Bowen’s techniques.

As of now, there are over 10,000 certified Bowen practitioners worldwide, reflecting the global recognition and popularity of the technique. The Bowen Therapy community continues to grow, with practitioners in numerous countries dedicated to offering this gentle and effective approach to healing.

What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen Therapy, created by Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) in Geelong, Australia, is a remedial body technique renowned for its gentle approach to soft-tissue manipulation. It involves targeted movements performed using the thumbs and fingers in a rolling motion across muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. This technique works primarily with the body’s connective tissue (fascia) and aims to address the underlying causes of dysfunction and illness, rather than merely alleviating symptoms. Bowen Therapy is suitable for individuals of all ages and health conditions, offering a holistic approach to healing and well-being.

What Happens in Bowen Treatment

During a Bowen Therapy session, Katie will perform specific moves that balance the body and promote self-healing with minimal intervention. The treatment involves several periods where the client rests, allowing the body to incorporate the gentle moves that have been applied. These breaks enable the body’s systems to respond with subtle, fine adjustments that help relieve tension, reduce pain, and initiate the healing process.

Katie will often observe the subtle to dramatic changes during these resting periods and adjust the subsequent moves accordingly. The Bowen Technique focuses on triggering the body’s natural healing responses without forcing any changes. Clients frequently experience improvement within a few days as their bodies readjust and utilise their self-healing resources.
